The Way to Work program is a statewide initiative that has put 12,000  adults back to work in full time employment and 14,000 youth into summer employment. This program is slated to be cut off on September 30th. Many people across the state are pushing to extend this program, in hopes of lessening the unemployment crisis instead of adding to it.

The taxi industry internationally is basically the same.  It is setup to avoid  labor laws and avoid unionism using  the big lie of being independent, free, with the ability to make as much as you want.  So I love those whom expose this industry for what it is.  Here is a special report from Austin Texas hot off the press.

Two weeks ago Philadelphia Parking Authority sent notices to approximately 100 taxi drivers, claiming that the drivers were owed money from past credit card transactions and should report to the PPA office on Wednesday, June 30th to receive their unclaimed check. As the drivers arrived at the Parking Authority, they were hand cuffed and arrested. In total, 27 drivers were arrested, 22 drivers were ultimately released and the whereabouts and identities of the other drivers is not known.

Recently, the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Board ruled that illegal unilateral changes made to employee working conditions by Temple prior to the strike on March 31 rendered such work stoppage a lockout. This decision effectively makes the nurses and allied professionals that went on a 28-day strike  in May, eligible for unemployment compensation costs, which come to around $550 per week per worker. “We are thrilled that our legal position has been vindicated by this decision,” said Bill Cruice, PASNAP’s Executive Director and attorney. “It is not surprising that the Unemployment Compensation Board has declared that the 4-week strike was actually a lockout by Temple; it is consistent with our message that Temple executives were reckless and irresponsible in their approach to our negotiations from day one.” The union estimates that Temple spent approximately $15 million during the strike on replacement workers’ wages, luxury hotel rooms, and airfare on temporary replacement employees from 42 states across the country, and will now owe an additional $1.5 million in unemployment compensation to PASNAP members.

Labor Justice Radio brings you a translated version of a piece by Radio Tlacuache. On April 27, Radio Tlacuache members visited the Home Depot in Northeast Philadelphia to interview day laborers. This Home Depot is a place where day laborers gather to look for work. On that day, there were almost 50 people hoping to be hired for work. These workers spoke about what a typical day is like for them, and shared their thoughts about the draconian immigration law that was recently passed in Arizona.

NY Lawmakers passed a bill that requires overtime pay and at least one day off per week for over 200,000 nannies and domestic workers across the state of NY. This bill comes after years of successful organizing and lobbying by Domestic Workers United (DWU), which has workerd to pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. The last step is for Governor Patterson to sign it into law, making New York the first state establishing rights for household workers.
