AUDIO: "Don't Worry You'll Have Northeastern Forever": The Closure of a Community Hospital
On Monday March 23rd Temple University Hospital System (TUHS) announced the closure of the Northeastern Hospital. Since the announcement community members, and hospital workers have been mounting an opposition to what one commentator sees as "a disaster to the community."The plan to close Northeastern will have serious effects on the community as the hospital sees an average of 120 patients a day, and delivers 1800 babies a year.Northeastern is the last maternity ward in the northeast of the city and with the closure as Julie Cousler of the community organization Congreso explained, "we have seen all of our hospitals close labor and delivery in the area... babies are gonna die, people are gonna be affected."
