Bad Journalism: Daily News claims Philly wheelchair users lament no taxis
DAN GERINGER's article in today's Daily News is a case of bad journalism. Geringer doesn't explain the merits of HB 1914 and how in its entirety, the bill is connected and allied with a cause greater than one alone, that both communities (people with disabilities and taxi drivers) suffer because the few are making big bucks by exploiting the many. Fleet Medallion owners, (who sometimes own hundreds of medallions) don't care if taxi drivers have basic human dignities or basic protection such as workers comp. 'And fleet medallion owners, don't care about the disabled, If they did there wouldn't be a need to require wheelchair accessible taxicabs, we would have had them on the streets by now.
The fact is that members of the Taxi Workers Alliance do. They started this campaign, and included the disabled in it.
Dan Geringer's story has us inaccurately portrayed as fighting against one another. And poor Vince Fenerty, Executive Director of the PPA, when he broke his leg, could not call a cab. When did he step in to support wheelchair accessible taxicabs? When HB 1914 was writtten by Representative Mark Cohen, it required these new medallions to bypass the PPA's auction procedures, and be given freely and directly to individual drivers through a lottery system. That's why Fennerty is concerned, because PPA wants that revenue.
Normally, I comment on every article written about taxi drivers, good or bad, by going to the website of the newspaper, and submitting a comment. Not this time. Dan interviewed Ron Blount to cover the disabled community's campaign for wheelchair accessible taxicabs AND the Taxi Workers Alliance's campaign for Workers Compensation. They are perfect together.
