Valentine's Rally and Press Conference

Condoms are one of the best defenses against unwanted pregnancy and
sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. At hundreds of stores
across the country in areas where people of color predominate, CVS
displays condoms in locked cabinets that require customers to summon
CVS staff to unlock them. The staff then monitors customers while they
make their selections. Public health advocates around the country have
said this practice creates a barrier and could discourage condom use.
DID YOU KNOW:
- HIV/AIDS is the No. 1 killer of black American women between 25 and 34.
- The HIV/AIDS infection rate in Philadelphia is 50% higher than New
York City and five times the national average.
- Approximately 750,000 teens become pregnant each year.
- At least one in four teen girls has a sexually transmitted infection.
DESPITE THESE FACTS:
- CVS locks up condoms in 1 out of every 5 of its Philadelphia stores.
- The stores in which CVS locks up condoms are located in communities
that are, on average, 72% people of color.
- Walgreens, one of CVS's closest competitors, has a policy against
locking up condoms, and does not lock up condoms in any of its
Philadelphia stores.
