In August, 2009 State Representative Mark Cohen introduced House Bill 1914. This legislation is seeking to provide workers compensation for taxi drivers. The Bill is currently in the Urban Affairs Committee.

The next step of the process will be a public hearing scheduled for December 17th 2009 at 10 am in the Convention Center, room 108. We are asking all Unified Taxi Workers Alliance (UTWA) members, members of our network, allies and friends to attend this hearing as we continue our fight for economic justice.

Tuesday evening, members of Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) and union officials gathered together students, Temple staff and community members to educate the Temple community on the day-to-day realities of healthcare providers at Temple Hospital. President of AFSCME Local 1723 and Temple University Staff Paul Dannenfelser began the discussion by sharing that this was another chapter in the story of Temple University’s approach to Labor on campus. He shared that his union went through a similar two-year fight for a contract in which Temple University was “not only anti-union but anti-worker.” He expressed earnestly the energy of the room, saying, “The nurses’ fight is our fight, the student fight is our fight. We are all in this together.”

In These Times reports that La Colectiva de Mujeres, a collective of domestic workers in San Francisco, have undertaken a new advertising campaign unveiling posters, billboards, bus ads and postcards depicting domestic workers as strong, independent and "green" savvy. The aim of the campaign is to both protect the rights of domestic workers while supporting a worker-run cleaning collective.

Political Scientist Michael Parenti catalogued seven generalizations about the way the news media create anti-union messaging--from painting workers as greedy, to omitting the salary of management or depicting public officials (like Mayor Nutter) as neutral. Using this lens to dissect the coverage of the SEPTA strike, it becomes clear that local media like the Inquirer and Daily News have a dangerous anti-union bias, once again making the case that to build our own movement we need our own media.
