SEPTA Strike! Workers Demand Fair Contract Negotations

 

5,500 members of Transport Workers Union Local 234 went on strike at 3AM Tuesday morning crippling SEPTA. Transit workers decided to strike as SEPTA is not offering enough in salary increases and pension benefits at the negotiating table.

 

Last time transit workers went on strike, in 2005, local media and public officials used the strike to paint transit workers as greedy and draw a line between them and other Philadelphians.  This is also the case today, as on the front page of the Philly.com story, writers Robert Moran and Melissa Dribben, "use" the voice of local Philadelphians to claim the strike is unfair and SEPTA workers are greedy. In another article, Mayor Nutter is quoted as saying, "the citizens are going to be outraged and angry." When has either Mayor Nutter or philly.com become the voice of Philadelphians. This is the reason we need our own independent media
