Union Secretaries at Temple Fired - Action Wednesday at Noon

Last week, the Temple University Administration, without advanced warning and for no direct cause, fired several union secretaries (members ofAFSCME 1741have been without a contract for nearly two years)in the College of Liberal Arts as part of what they called "restructuring." This "restructuring" mostly involves hiring a number of the secretaries back in non-union jobs, but very similar capacities, at reduced pay and benefits. This aggressive behavior towards employees is a growing pattern with Temple's corporate administration as we have seen it with their treatment of Security Guardsand more recently with the closure of Northeastern Hospital.

If this sort of behavior from the administration bothers you, you have a chance to do something about it. Come to Rittenhouse Square in Center City today at 12:00 for a rally in support of the secretaries, and let the Temple University Administration know that this is a vindictive and cruel way to deal with employees who have served the school faithfully. Members of AFSCME (the union representing secretaries at Temple), TAUP (the union representingTemple's faculty), and TUGSA (the union representing Temple TAs and RAs) will be in attendance. Rittenhouse Square isbounded by18th Street on the East sideand 19th Street on the west side, and between Walnut Street on the North side and Spruce Street on the South side. It is easily accessible from Temple by taking the Broad Street line (also known as the Orange line) south to the Walnut/Locust exit, and then walking four blocks west on either Walnut or Locust. You'll see the square once you reach 18th Street.

Union Secretaries at Temple Fired

Proof that Union busting is alive and thriving into the 21st century.  And some people still don't get it.  Proof: resistance to the Employee Free Choice Act.
We have to keep the pressure on politicians, step up our media campaigns and have more demonstrations to fight this kind of treatment.
