Workers Across England and Ireland Occupy Car Manufacturing Plants
Hundreds of employees of car part maker Visteon have occupied factories across England and Ireland.
The occupations follow the summary decision on Tuesday by the company's UK arm, formerly part of car giant Ford, to place itself in administration and lay-off 565 of its 610 workforce, without warning or ample severance packages.
Some of the workers have been employed by the company for up to thirty years. Frank Jepson, a worker in Essex explained, people here have given unwavering loyalty for 30 years only to be treated with complete contempt. The directors of Visteon have behaved despicably.Up to 200 workers are occupying the Finaghy plant in west Belfast, 130 are on the roof and around the premises in Enfield, North London, while protests are ongoing at Basildon, Essex.
